Paul Schafer is dark-haired, thin and not tall, with blue-grey eyes not often surprised; he rarely smiles. He's a student at the University of Toronto, a basketball player. Good at chess. Good at a lot of things, though opening up to other people would not be one of them.



Paul Schafer went to his death months ago, on the Summer Tree, in a world not his own - a willing sacrifice to the god Mornir, to bring rain to a land in drought.

The god came, and the rains came back. And so, too, did Paul Schafer - now the Twiceborn, Lord of the Summer Tree, sent back for what purpose no one knows, perhaps least of all Paul himself.



Paul's destiny now lies in Fionavar, the world at the center of the pattern, of which all others are reflections. Paul is the one who asks the hard questions, and speaks the bitter truths - not always truths he'd known before he spoke them, for the ravens Thought and Memory sat with him on the Summer Tree, and return to him sometimes unbidden.

He's also, on occasion, short-tempered, sharp-tongued, heartsick and hard; but then, we all have our flaws.

And to make up for it, he really is a very good chess player.
